Analogue 72

Planning for resilience when the digital world stops

Analogue 72 (A72) is a new national resilience initiative developed by the Cyber Centre of Excellence (CCoE). It asks a simple but profound question:

If digital systems became unavailable for 72 hours, what would people, communities, councils and essential service providers need to do to keep society functioning safely?

Why Analogue 72 Matters

From Storm Arwen to cyber attacks, flooding and wildfires, recent events have shown how quickly the systems we rely on can be disrupted.

Our communities proved their strength during Covid-19, but preparing for a digital disruption requires a new approach.

A72 starts with people and communities, and asks what is needed to remain safe, informed and supported in the first 72 hours when digital services can no longer be relied upon.

This Green Paper sets out a practical framework for whole-of-society resilience and invites your input.

A different approach to resilience

Most resilience planning starts from the top down, focusing on minimal viable public services.

A72 takes a bottom-up, whole-of-society approach.

It begins with the needs of people and communities, recognising that resilience is built through local connections, trusted information, practical support and community capability.

Our aim is not just to sustain a minimum level of service, but to enable a viable community response during times of disruption.
